Understanding stress

Stress is the result of internal and external factors that have an impact on your entire being: body and mind. Everyone reacts differently to stress – and stress can be positive, neutral or negative.

There are certain internal factors that determine how you respond to stress. These include:

  • Your general health
  • Nutrition and diet
  • Physical fitness levels
  • Emotional resilience
  • Your outlook and attitude towards life
  • How much sleep and rest you’re getting

Your entire body can be affected by stress including your brain and nerves, skin, muscles and joints, heart, stomach, pancreas, intestines and reproductive system.

Stress helps us adapt to different environments including hot and cold temperatures, different altitudes, physical threats, wild animals and other dangers. Stress becomes harmful onces it displaces the internal harmony and disrupts our steady-state internal system.

When we are threatened we experience a fight or flight response which disrupts our internal homeostasis. The adrenal glands start releasing powerful neurotransmitters into the blood stream which results in a higher heart rate, rapid breathing and heightened awareness. Being in this state for too long and too often damages the body.

Signs and symptoms of stress

Too much unhealthy stress shows up on various physical, mental or emotional ways, including:

  • Disturbed sleep
  • Tense muscles and muscle pain
  • Headaches
  • Stomach and instestinal problems
  • Nervousness and anxiety
  • Moodiness
  • Lack of energy
  • Decreased immune system function and susceptibility to sickness
  • Fatigue
  • Overeating

These symptoms can appear due to other reasons, but they are common in individuals experiencing too much unhealthy stress. Interestingly, stress factors that are predictable are less harmful to us than unpredictable factors.
