I wonder how often you stop and notice your posture. If you held your baby finger backwards for several hours at a time, you would notice that the joint that was being stressed would become very sore. You wouldn’t be at all surprised to find that it became sore. Yet most people are surprised when their spines become sore after several hours of slouching in front of the computer or standing at a party.

Balance is something that many people in the city of Johannesburg struggle with. I hold the view that we can’t find balance in our bodies unless we have it in our lives and conversely we can’t find balance in our lives unless we have it in our bodies. So in short, physical and life balance are intertwined concepts.

When we feel defensive within ourselves we bring stress and tension into our bodies. This stress is held by the muscles, ligament and tendons of the body and it leads to tightening of structures and compression of joints. Think of a child who is shouted at for doing something “wrong”. Picture that child’s face and sense the tension in his/her face muscles. Can you sense the child holding its breath and sucking its tongue tight into its mouth almost to close its mouth off and give it more of a sense of self preservation?
